Mr. Rogers - True Authenticity Makes The Sale

See all 33 Comments

In an age of inauthentic marketing and sales messages,
it's refreshing to see a sales message that is real and truly authentic.

Do you remember Mr. Rogers on television many years ago?

He's the guy many of us watched growing up.

Here he is making his case for $20 million dollars in funding for his program.

Watch how he connects with his decision maker in a heartfelt authentic way (rare for most sales people) and focuses on a specific problem he believes he can solve.

Authenticity, problem solving and trust – rare values for many in sales today – but for our
Unlock The Game Inner Circle members, these are their core values.

Enjoy… please leave your comments and feedback below.

(it's only about 6 minutes...hope you have a little time in your day to watch this)

Mr. Rogers was a man who impacted a whole lot of our lives. He lived by the golden rule and exemplified it daily. We never had to wonder what our kids might see any given day. That is refreshing. I will be purchasing Ari's material (probably all I can) in the very near future. I try to live by the same faith and standards I know Mr. Rogers did. I think that this material will help me treat people even more respectfully and make it "all about them." Thanks Mr. Rogers and Ari.

Rod, I was there for Mr. Rogers' commencement speech at BGSU as well and one of the top 5 moments of my life. Truly an incredible person and saleman extraordinaire in getting children to follow his lead - even in college.
Cezar Cehan, Omaha, NE , May 29, 2010 at 10:00 PM
I listened this 3 times and I'll keep doing that until I get to BE like that person, not only to talk like him. The real difference comes from inside out, I believe.
Arthur Rego, Bermuda , May 27, 2010 at 7:21 AM
Hi Ari,

Thanks for sharing this valuable video with us again which outlines the importance of being authentic and trust worthy and not coming across as a "salesman "

Ari it is a pleasure to be connected to you

Best,

Arthur

Mr. Roger's gave the commencement address at my wife's graduation from college in 1986. He went to the microphone and the first thing he said was "I'll sing it if you will!"

5,000 people stood up and sang at the top of their lungs "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood..." !!!

It is the only graduation speech I remember!

Rod

PS - Ari, on your current schedule your next post is scheduled for January 2011! Good post...we need more!

Thank you, Ari, for sharing this superb example of authenticity and the effectiveness of speaking from the heart. So many life lessons in such a short segment...and a powerful illustration that you don't have to be pushy to be incredibly persuasive. What a great way to start my day.
Steve Anson, Bangalore, South India , May 25, 2010 at 6:01 AM
Excellent, Ari. Caused me to think about my responsibility for hundreds of childcare centers and how parents still yearn for the type of wholesome values education Rogers was promoting way back in 1969.

And, as you intended, this is a fine example of "authentic" marketing.

Thank you!

Thank you, Ari. My heart is warmer now.

Communicating a message that he felt strongly about in a manner that borders on the monotonous is quite a special way to deliver a successful sales pitch. While enthusiasm for his subject is clear, when the audience is Congress it seems that keeping a lid on it helps rather than hinders the outcome. Nice one, Mr. Rogers.
Belle, Philippines , May 24, 2010 at 8:09 PM
I fully understand what he felt, because i am also into child care, here and abroad, direct and indirectly and this movie clip is worth to publish. Thank you Ari, for considering Mr. Rogers view as your core value and that's make you all authentically brilliant! This is the first time i hear about Mr. Roger and he deserve what he got.

Ari, I thought this was beautiful. Thanks for sharing this.
Jonathan Gunson, New Zealand , May 24, 2010 at 5:20 PM
Well Ari

If anything convinced me to open your e-mails from this point forwards, it was this post and the extraordinary little heart filled movie featuring Mr Rogers.

Sadly I don't trust virtually anyone now in this business of making sales online, but you just restored a little of that today.

So now I know that in one small corner of the internet something is real.

Best wishes

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan, thank you for your vote of confidence. Trust these days can unfortunately only be found from a few sources who ultimately really care about people. Caring for others, even in the sales world, ironically makes someone a better person and ultimately is the key to success.
Peter Ekstrom, New York - Long Island , May 24, 2010 at 4:52 PM
Outstanding contribution you've made. What a great story, and a great business point. Nicely done!

Thanks Ari, this is wonderful! I love the part where the Senator said he got goose bumps and how his way of speaking to Mr. Rogers changed, notice his voice become soft... Mr. Rogers communicated his passion and his true intention in helping children.
Mike Barth, New Berlin, WI , May 24, 2010 at 2:01 PM
This is great. This is what sales is about. Being genuine and passionate about helping others with what you are selling. When I was being interviewed for the company I work for my manager spoke this way to me. That was one of the deciding factors I decided to go with him instead of the other company interviewing me. I new he cared and was passionate about what his message was when talking to clients. I'm not saying the other company wasn't. No pun intended.
Alkaline Water Guru, Morgan Hill, CA , May 24, 2010 at 1:22 PM
Thank you for sharing, Ari. I wasn't an avid viewer of Mr. Rogers, but I always respected him and his commitment for what he believes in.

It would be awesome to find a person who could communicate trust and authenticity in writing for direct sales products. Do you know of anyone?
Thanks again, Brad.

This made me cry. Goosebumps in deed. Amazing connection with others. Mr. Rogers is my hero. Thanks Ari for sharing this rare find. Excellent. I love his talk on communications. I am teaching my children the difference between Aggressive, Assertive and Passive Aggressive communications. I did not have that lesson. Mr. Roger gave that to us indirectly as kids. I think this is why I appreciate you program so much. Like Rogers, when people understand how to stay centered with their emotions and remove pressure from their communication style in a situation, they can connect, they can be heard and in this case can win their proposal. Again thanks so much for sharing it.
J. Borouchoff, Milwaukee, WI , May 24, 2010 at 1:07 PM
The key thing I see going on here is that Mr. Rogers lived his passion. He had a strong sense of what his right livelihood was and so, to him, his words didn't even feel like a "sales pitch". They just flowed naturally from who he was. If you have a passion for what you're selling, then it will feel like no effort at all. If you don't have this passion, then getting the $20 million is going to be painful or entirely impossible!
Michele Diamond, Wayland, MA, USA , May 24, 2010 at 12:37 PM
Thank you for posting this. Not only do you feel the authenticity but it is a great message to remember to send to children. I am a child therapist & have copied down the words of Mr. Rogers song to share with the children I work with.
Modern Maze, Cherry Hill, NJ. USA , May 24, 2010 at 12:22 PM
This message could not have been delivered at a better time. Thank you.
Michael Quagliato, Miami, FL , May 24, 2010 at 12:19 PM
What a charming reminder that when a listener wants to listen and a speaker can stay true to his 'voice', that a true communication value can exist. The pacing and word choice was authentic to Mr. Rogers, and showed that whatever his choice of audience, it was his heartfelt focus. A special place in heaven for him.
Patrick Ambrosio, New York , May 24, 2010 at 12:18 PM
This is truly inspirational, and a reminder to us all that an open , honest , truth based conversation is the best way to approach your communications with others, in any setting, sales notwithstanding.

Thank you for sharing this with us all.
John A. Fallone - Traininguru, Stamford, CT 06905 , May 24, 2010 at 12:08 PM
Initially, Mr. Rogers' drone and cadence had a less than spectacular impact on me in terms of holding my interest...but then something began to click!

In spite of his "less than dynamic" speaking style, his message connected--because he manifested genuine concern for children--and presented a simple, authentic message of wholesome values.

Interestingly, his low key, sincere style turned out to be extraordinarily powerful in delivering the message as it disarmed the audience.
Sanjay Patel, Toronto, Ontario, Canada , May 24, 2010 at 11:40 AM
At the beginning, I personally thought his pacing of his words was very slow (even though I used to watch his show when I was kid!). But that pacing is is exactly what allowed him to create that trust. Then his passion kicked in and it was just a matter of time before he landed a $20 million sale in less than 7 minutes.
Syed Idros AlhabShi , Singapore, Tampines , May 20, 2010 at 10:47 PM
Wow!!.. I love the way he said it and how sincere he was that actually the decision maker believes him.. This is what we should be doing. Thanks Ari!!
Kathryn Sieber, Sydney, Australia , May 20, 2010 at 10:44 PM
A beautiful heartfelt piece. What he does not say but which is implied is that he is showing children how to respect themselves and those around them. He is also implying trust, in yourself and others, both of which is sadly lacking in our society today.
Thomas Reusch, Florence,KY 41042 , May 20, 2010 at 3:44 PM
Wow, he was sincere. I will watch again and learn.
Thanks Ari

Hey, Ari-
Great video! I used to love watching Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, and I'll admit, I just got a little verklempt while watching him plead his case. I think one of the big lessons here is being involved with something that you're so passionate about that you don't have to fake anything...
Darryl, Columbus OH , May 20, 2010 at 2:39 PM
Wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing. I've been thinking about this type of trust and authenticity all week. What a perfect example. Here's to goose bumps.
Elena Patrice, VA , May 20, 2010 at 11:21 AM
This is the most ideal, most appropriate video and anyone just "gets" it when you watch this! What one man can do ...! Thank you for this gem of a find!
Delmae, Australia , May 20, 2010 at 12:54 AM
The power of authentic communication. Thanks again for sharing this powerful message.

This is two fold, not only for our own communication but it serves as a reminder for those of us in the media, the responsibility that comes with what we communicate to the world.
Micheal Hobbins, Dallas, Texas , May 20, 2010 at 12:28 AM
So good to hear your wisdom again Ari. The sales (and business) world needs you! All the old sales gurus are fading away and you're the new inspiration many of us are looking for. Keep these great ideas coming!
